    Centre plans exit exam for MBBS Students

    The Government is considering instituting an exit examination for MBBS students passing out from Government and Private Medical colleges. This decision has come in the wake of recommendations from the Medical Council of India (MCI) and parliamentary standing committee on health and family welfare.

    Recently, the Health Ministry of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2016 has prepared a draft, suggesting an exit exam at MBBS level which is also associated with combined counseling at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and reservations of about 50% of the seats of the postgraduate courses for medical officers.

    Medical students will now be required to do a little more than completing a five and a half year long medical degree to secure the ‘Doctor’ title.

    The Union Health Ministry on December 29th 2016 unveiled the draft Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2016 according to which MBBS students will now be required to qualify the National Exit Test (NEXT).

    The test is anticipated to create a level-playing field in Medical education which is progressively becoming privatized.

    A National-level exit exam may soon be in place for passing MBBS in India. NITI Aayog has proposed a National Entry and Exit exam in its Draft National Medical Commission Bill, 2016.

    This has come as a move to regulate the medical education in the country.
