Dentistry was initially practiced in the United States during the colonial era. During the colonial era, a few physicians and surgeons exercised Dentistry along with a large number of barber dentists.

Until 1840, degrees of competence of the Dental Practitioners varied significantly. Practitioners were usually unskilled or self-educated or received apprenticeship training from an established practitioner.

Inaugurated in 1840, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery received its charter through an act of the Maryland General Assembly.

With the establishment of this college, Dentistry received recognition as a vocation separate from Medicine.

Dentistry would have became a Medical Speciality in case the Maryland legislature had granted its consent to a request to incorporate it as a department at the University of Maryland’s Medical school, however, the request was declined owing to cost issues.

Consequently, Dentistry became a separate Profession.

Following the establishment of BCDS, the Ohio Dental School was founded in 1845. Following this, the Transylvania School of Dental Surgery was set up in 1850.

The number of Dental Schools went up to 15 by the year 1876.
